Murray Phillips' Picks for where to eat

Restaurant du Vieux Port
39 St. Paul in Old Montreal (514-866-3175)

This is one to put on your list for dinner! The food is great, service is friendly, and attentive, portions are more than sufficient, while the prices are very reasonable. Choose from steaks, chicken, fish and wait for a taste treat.

The owners are very public minded and support several charities, and were very helpful in co-sponsoring a dinner for the Chorus representatives in November 2002.

Reservations are recommended, especially if you would like to eat in the outdoor area. It is very popular during the summer.

Michael Frolick's Picks for where to eat

Cafe L'Etranger
680 St. Catherine W. & McGill College (514-392-9016)

This is my favourite restaurant in Montreal. A casual, spacious basement joint popular with the student crowd offers an entirely eclectic menu spanning extremely creative sandwiches and wraps to Thai-inspired and SoCal recipes in a 25 page menu! Café L’Étranger has a beer special of the day and the daily lunch specials come with a decent soup, a slice of "is-it-bread-or-sundried-fruit?" and a colourful salad.

One of the main dishes I usually get is a Three Musketeers sandwich, which features three different kinds of chicken with tomato and lettuce on a thick brown bread. This is definitely a good choice for an affordable (at $12 with tax and tip) downtown lunch.

Montréal Keg
25 Rue St. Paul Est
Montreal, Quebec
(514-781-9093)

Located in Old Montreal in a beautiful centuries old building, one block east of St. Paul and St. Laurent. Reservations accepted seven days a week.

In my opinion this is the absolute best place for a delicious steak meal in Montreal! This Keg has atmosphere any young, (like myself), to experienced food connoisseurs will enjoy. You will not be disappointed with the quality of food, professional friendly service or overall satisfaction. A meal here without liquor will cost you $40-$50. It’s worth it!

Hi again Barbershoppers! Your young and cool reviewer, Michael is here again! This time I’d like to let you know about a great fast-paced, university student to mid-aged crowd, drinking pub. Established four decades ago, this sports pub offers greasy food (including Montreal’s famous Poutine), giant screens for you sports fans, lots of eye candy, and best of all, cheap beer! If you can make it over on Thursday night you’ll catch the $0.87 shooters.

Sundays Beat the Clock

Brutopia Brewpub
1219 Crescent,
between Ste. Catherine and Rene Levesque.

http://www.brutopia.net OK. Now this joint is the best place in town, possibly Canada, for microbrews and fine ales as agreed upon by youthful beer enthusiasts and experienced beer connaisseurs. In fact, the Montreal Mirror (local popular newspaper) voted Brutopia number two for Best watering hole, and number one for Best locally brewed beer. Some of their brews on tap include Extra Blonde, Honey Beer Nut Brown Ale, India Pale Ale (IPA), Raspberry Blonde, Honey Brown, and Hemp. With a fun, relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff, this watering hole is sure to tantalize your thirstbuds.

Ron Schurman's Picks for where to eat

I was fortunate enough to have spent most of my working life in Old Montreal and had the opportunity to sample a number of great restaurants in that area, on expense account, of course.

Our visitors should be encouraged to get down to that part of the city, see the harbour with its excellent attractions, and pick a restaurant, almost any restaurant, to sample some French cuisine. They will not be disappointed.

Here are a couple of my favourites down there:-
