What's the definition of a minor second? Two leads singing in unison.
Ted Hanna passed away at 90.
This article is from an email by Graham Fagan, former member of the Montreal Chapter.
Constantine T. Hanna (" Ted " to everyone) passed away this afternoon at about 2:30 P.M.
Ted was a 60-year member of the Barbershop Harmony Society and would have celebrated his 91st birthday on March 9.
Ted was instrumental in the formation of the Montreal Chapter, which in turn begot St. Lambert, Lakeshore, Rosemere, Trois-Rivières, Plattsburgh, NY, and Kentville, NS ...The Kentville Chapter led to the formation of the whole Sunrise (Atlantic) Division in our Northeastern District.
Ted was a great friend of Bob Godfrey, (a talented and prolific barbershop arranger) and transposed many of Bob's musical thoughts to sheet music. Many of you know that Bob (at one time a member of the Montreal Chapter) could neither read nor write music and he would sing his thoughts to Ted who would transcribe them on paper.
Ted was one of those many barbershoppers who, although they may not be known far and wide, made this Society successful.
I first met Ted, as a member of the Montreal Chapter, about 40 years ago. Even though he had perfect pitch (which I don't) he suffered me coaching his quartet and gazed quizzically as I suggested he might try making an sss sound more like a z ...and other "tricks ", he called them.
We have remained in touch to this day, either directly or through his family (his one and only love and sweet wife of 67 years, Margaret and his son Mark , and there are others that I have not met ) .
TED - Rest in Peace, the world is a better place because of you! I'm sure the harmonies will continue in your afterlife!
Jeffery Mance attended the memorial service.
"I drove to Unionville, Toronto Wednesday to attend Ted Hanna's memorial service and it was a beautiful tribute to his life. Margaret, his wife of 67 years, was there, together with all of their children, grandchildren, and one great grandchild. Their son, Mark, talked of Ted's family roots in Grandmère, his career in textiles, his faith, his passion for music. Two of the groups in which Ted has been active, the Markham Barbershoppers and the Suburbanaires, with about sixty voices, combined to sing Ted's arrangement of the "Twenty Third Psalm", and "I Believe". The congregation sang "Praise to the Lord, the Almighty" and "O God Our Help in Ages Past". The singing did Ted proud!
"Ted has been laid to rest in the church grounds of St Philip's on the Hill Anglican church, Unionville.
"Some of the people with Montreal connections who were there: Graham Fagan, John Hodges, previous Montreal Chapter president, and Jack Biggars, Montreal member in the very early years and singing with the Suburbanaires. Bob Hanna, Ted's nephew was briefly a Montreal chapter member and also devoted show attendee, and Peter Evans, recent Montreal member, also singing with the Suburbanaires."
You might just be a Barbershopper
