Commonly Unique
to New OrleansBy Rob Mance with editorial adjustments by the editor.
At the Region 1 contest last weekend in Springfield Massachusetts, Commonly Unique finished an incredible 2nd place in a very difficult competition with a score of 595. The winners, Encore, were only 4 points ahead. It was a contest where most in audience had picked nine or ten quartets for the top five. In SAI, quartets qualify for International by being in the top 15 at the previous international, winning one of the 28 regional contests, or by obtaining a wildcard spot by being in the top 10 of non-winners when all of the regional contests scores are added together. This was the final weekend of regional competitions, and Commonly Unique has finished in the 7th wildcard spot qualifying for the international quartet contest in New Orleans this October. This is very exciting for a few reasons. This is the first time a Quebec quartet has ever qualified for the international contest. And, another region 1 quartet, From the Edge has also earned a wildcard. The three quartets will be joined by Coastline Show Chorus (directed by Gail Jencik) and Royal River Chorus (another wildcard!) giving Region 1 five international competitors for the first time ever!
West Island Chorus Places 5th
By Rob Mance with editorial adjustments by the editor.
For the first time in 16 years, the West Island chorus returned home with medals from their regional contest. They increased their score 45 points to 544 and also won a ribbon for being the 3rd place AA (midsize) chorus. Martha Mance fell from the third row to the stage floor right in the middle of the "I Can't Give You Anything But Love." It was later revealed that the heel on her shoe broke during a choreography move and went flying across the stage. The chorus never missed a beat and kept going. Martha picked herself up and made it back to her riser spot in time for the next move! Now that is being into the song!
Showtime is only 2 weeks away!
Those songs are starting to become part of you, your tickets are being sold at a rapid rate, and the money is being turned in to Bert Brossoit. Advertising is being turned in to Alan Kenley and we are getting excited about paying Bert for our afterglow tickets. Deadline is next Monday!

Harmony College Northeast
August 12-14, 2005 – Fitchburg State College
Start with an International Champion quartet (Power Play) and stir in an International Finalist quartet (Realtime)!
Add in a few district champ quartets and some of the best teachers and coaches in NED! Sprinkle in experts from outside the district! Garnish with great classes and the chance to sing all night! Let it simmer for a full day and then top it off with a humongous show on Saturday night! We call it Harmony College Northeast and we welcome anyone who wants to take part. This is one of the premier social and educational events on the NED calendar, so make it a "must attend" on your calendar.
Quartet coaching and individual courses are available and details are on the HCNE web site. http://www.nedistrict.org/schools/hcne
Here are a few samples for individuals: Creating a Visual Package; Vocal Production Boot Camp; Arranging From a Piece of Sheet Music; Sight Reading/ Sight Singing; Woodshedding and Tag Singing.
And of course, the quartet coaching uses the POD system, where you work with a team of coaches for a full day, each reinforcing what the other has said..
What you won’t see on the web site but we can tell you about are the opening night barbecue on the quad, the closing pizza and beer afterglow, and the spectacular food served up by the Fitchburg State College staff.
