Phillips’ Phearless Prognostications
My fearless predictions for the top five quartets and choruses in this year’s contests were pretty accurate.
My lists.
Quartet Top 5
I also predicted the Men in Black would finish in the Top 20 this year and they did, coming 17th.
The 6 (six)-point difference between 1st and 2nd is the closest ever in a quartet contest
Chorus Top 5
I thought that there weren’t likely to be many changes in the chorus contest, and the top 5 going into the contest would hold their positions. I was wrong. The Vocal Majority ballad wasn’t as strong as we have come to expect, and Westminster were phenomenal, leading to a 17 point margin for the VMs 11th Gold, but wait for 2007!
The fish of Greendale were the hit of the contest, pushing the excellent performance of The Alliance to 6th place.
Performing last allowed the webcast crew to come up with the Fish Cam and the Turtle Cam. The audience loved them and the applause went on for a long time. If you saw it, you know what I mean. If you didn’t, ask me about it.
Sign up today to go to Denver next year so you can see the contests in person! What a battle it will be in 2007.

Talk to somebody about barbershop this week! Our target for members this year is for a 7 member NET INCREASE by the end of 2006.
Welcome two new staff members to your Society! Charlie Davenport and Drew Ellis will lead the membership and member services department as director and assistant director, respectively.
Charlie and Drew will work with staff and volunteers to develop effective member recruiting methods; to execute annual membership drives and workshops; to foster better chapter and district communications; and to guide chapters through chartering and incorporation. Charlie will begin his duties Sept. 1; Drew will join him in January 2007.
"These two men bring complementary experience to our organisation and a strong background in barbershop harmony," commented Barbershop Harmony Society Chief Executive Officer Ed Watson. "Since the growth of and service to our membership is our number-one priority, that is where we will concentrate our manpower and efforts."
Charlie has more than 25 years of experience in professional recruiting, including three years as head of his own recruiting firm, and 18 years in systems administration.
Drew’s professional background includes serving as a marketing and personnel specialist and teaching. His music performance experience covers a broad spectrum from barbershop harmony to country to "oldies."
A member of BHS since 1979, Charlie currently chairs the BHS members services committee and played an integral role in one of its most successful membership campaigns. He also serves as an instructor in the organisation’s chapter operations education program, specialising in member services. Charlie has taken lead roles both with the BHS Mid-Atlantic District and the Wilkes-Barre (Pennsylvania) Chapter and has been a member of
DELASUSQUEHUDMAC, Inc., since 1996.Drew’s affiliation with BHS goes back to 1999. He is currently a member of the Nashville, Tenn., chapter, but was a charter member of the Athens, Ala., chapter and a member of the Memphis chapter, as well. He has held several chapter leadership roles, including visual/choreography director, section leader and board member-at-large, and won a district chorus championship with the Memphis chapter in 2002.
Charlie earned a Bachelor of Science in business administration from Juniata College in Huntingdon, Penn.
Drew is working towards a Master of Arts degree in Christian ministry from Harding University Graduate School of Religion and holds a Bachelor of Arts in speech communications and business from Stephen F. Austin State University.
