Simply put, we are men who like to sing together! We sing a in a style called Barbershop. This is a capella singing - without any musical instruments. We sing in Four Part Harmony - the four parts being Tenor, Lead, Baritone and Bass. The notes of a song are comprised of chords from these four parts. When the four parts combine, they result in very pleasing overtones causing a melodic ringing effect. While Barbershop is similar to other forms of a capella and doo wopp harmonies, our arrangements are in Barbershop format. The name "Barbershop" comes from the 1910 song, "Play That Barbershop Chord". In 1938, a group of men formed the Society for the Preseveration and Propagation of BarberShop Singing in America. Now known as the Barbershop Harmony Society, there are chapters all over the United States and Canada and affiliated organizations in several other countries. The Green Mountain Chorus is the perfoming Chorus of the Vermont chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society. We date back to 1947 and have recently celebrated our 60th anniversary. We meet and practice each Tuesday at 7 PM at the St. Francis Xavier School, 5 St. Peter Street in Winooski. We perform an annual show in the spring, a holiday show in December and can often be heard at Burlington First Night, Vermont Lake Monsters games, UVM Basketball and Hockey Games, at Nursing Homes, at the Malls, at area Churches and at other events throughout the year. Our chorus consists of over 35 active participants, ranging in age from 18 to 78. We come from all walks of life, including students, engineers, laywers, electricians, teachers, salesmen, sculpters, clergymen and retirees. The one thing we all have in common - the love of singing together and blending our voices to ring those chords! |
