If ignorance is bliss, why aren't more people happy?

Have your Show tickets? John Clendinneng tells me many members haven't yet taken tickets for the show. If this includes you, how much you are prepared to pay in dues to keep singing with this great chorus. The show is our largest fundraiser, by far. We need to sell ALL of the 1000 seats. Right now, we are sitting at half the seats taken. A ticket to our show is an easy sell. We have a great chorus and two great quartets headlining the show. Ask your friends to come. They will enjoy the show.

Even if you have taken tickets, you must sell them. Please do that. We ALL need to do our part.

Ron Dawson is home! Ron is home and recovering nicely. I spoke with Ron on Thursday, and he sounded great. His voice was strong and he said he felt better than he had for some time. He was going to spend the weekend at his Mother's in Alexandria, Ontario. He won't be out to a rehearsal for several weeks, until he is able to drive himself.

Ray Watkins taking physiotherapy. Ray has been diagnosed with spinal stenosis and has been getting physiotherapy that will give him some relief. Let's hope it works. Best wishes, Ray!

Music Team NEWS Please have: Sixteen Tons MEMORISED for April 16, 2001and Words MEMORISED for April 30, 2001.

The speed at which My Romance/It's You has come together shows what we can do. Let's keep doing it!

Spring Prelims will be held in Nashua, NH on April 27-29,2001. The Granite & Pine (hosts) and The Patriot Divisions will also be held that weekend.

The Division Quartets will be combined with the Prelims competitors on Friday night beginning at 7:15PM.

The Division Choruses will be held on Saturday beginning at noon with The Granite & Pine Division Choruses singing first, an intermission followed by the Patriot Division Choruses. Evaluations will be held immediately after the chorus contests are complete. The Contest Administrator Don Crowl will determine where they will be held.

Jerry Silverberg has arranged rooms at $69.00 US at the Holiday Inn. See him for details.

Joy of singing in a choir could be preventive medicine, researchers say

By Marla Jo Fisher Knight Ridder , 3/31/2001

IRVINE, Calif. - Singing in a choir might just make you healthier, according to a newly publicized study by the University of California, Irvine. Researchers found increased levels of disease-fighting proteins in the mouths of choir members after they sang Beethoven's choral masterwork, ''Missa Solemnis.''

According to the study, a protein used by the immune system to fight disease called Immunoglobulin A increased 150 percent during rehearsals and 240 percent during performance. The boost seemed directly related to the singers' states of mind, which many participants described as happy or euphoric.

''The more passionate you feel while singing, the greater the effect,'' said education professor Robert Beck, who authored the study with Thomas Cesario, dean of the university's College of Medicine. The study was published this school year in the scientific journal Music Perception.

The difference in the increased levels between a performance and rehearsal, scientists theorized, might be because the singers had achieved mastery of the complicated piece after often-stressful rehearsals and also were enjoying the thrill of the performance itself.

That makes perfect sense to baritone Steve Morris, a member of the Santa Ana, Calif.-based Pacific Chorale who participated in the study and has a deeply emotional reaction to performing.

''Afterward, I'm floating,'' said Morris, 61, a member of choir with his wife, Ann, since 1969. ''I feel terrific. There have been many times going into a concert when I'm fighting a cold or have a sore throat, but I managed to show up and do the performance, and I'm higher than a kite when it's over.''

Researchers attended two rehearsals and a performance of the 160-member Pacific Chorale over an eight-week period, as the choir prepared for and sang Beethoven's complex masterwork of sacred music. © Copyright 2001 Globe Newspaper Company.

Mini-Pitch Editor needed. Murray wants to give someone else a chance to edit the Mini-Pitch. He will be asking people for their recommendations. If you think you would like to try it out, let Murray know. He will help get you started.

Pay-as-you-go Joe - The total dues for a regular member of the Greater Montreal Chapter are $180.00 per year. We pay our dues either once a year for the coming year on our renewal date, or we can use the Pay-as-you-go-Joe system. The $15 Monthly or $45.00 quarterly payment hardly hurts. This is encouraged for all members of the Chapter. Post-dated cheques payable to Island City Chorus can be given to Ray Watkins, Chapter Treasurer.

Christmas CD Co-ordinator. Richard Frenette has accepted the job of co-ordinating the Christmas CD. We will need to have people to help him. See Richard and offer to help!

Quartet Development. Murray Phillips has assumed the role of Quartet Development Co-ordinator.

He will be asking you to try singing in a quartet, perhaps for the first time. Try it. You will find it a wonderful experience. If he doesn't ask you, go ask him! We are aiming at having at least four quartets singing at Division 2002. Find three other guys and give it a shot!

Show Advertising is on sale now. We will have 1,000 people at our show. Most of them are people who are in the target market of most Montreal businesses.

Advertising space is available at a very reasonable cost. Ask your friends and business customers if they would like to have an advertisement in our program. It is not expensive, and it hits the people to whom they want to talk.

Michael Frolick is co-ordinating the advertising sales and has forms. See him tonight!
