National Anthems at the Ball Game.
It seems like it was months ago, but it was only on June 23, 2003 that the Island City Chorus sang the American and Canadian National Anthems for the Expos/Pirates baseball game.
We were pretty awesome, as the applause from the crowd would attest, and our greatest critics (our families) also told us that we had done well.
To make the evening even better, the Expos continued their winning streak while the chapter or quartets sing the anthems. They have never lost a game when either the chorus or a chapter quartet has sung the anthems. Maybe they should have us come now, and get them back on their winning way!
International was a great success.
It took a bunch of time and talented people to bid for the Convention, then it took more time and more talented people to prepare for it, and then it took more talented people and some great companies to make sure that it all came together.
The week of June 29 - July 6, 2003 will be remembered in Montreal and the Society for many years. The contests produced some excellent singing, wonderful entertainment and worthy Champions. The Vocal Majority won their tenth Gold Medal as a chorus. The members of Power Play were crowned quartet champions in one of the best contests in memory. HEAT won the MBNA Collegiate contest, and could become another phenomenon with the big boys contest. The retiring Champs Four Voices left an indelible mark on the week by bringing the Voices of Lee with them to share the stage. They added a crown jewel to the week by leading the Sunday Church Service.
It was a week for the memory with different things for every person, yet there was a common thread. We all had fun!
Chapter members did their part.
The set-up for the convention started at 8:00 AM Sunday, June 29, 2003 at the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth. We were happy to have many of the members there to help, so the work went very well.
Nancy Thorne, Manager of the Harmony Marketplace was overwhelmed with the help provided by our crew, and was able to get everything set up but 5:00 PM.
All the office areas were set up and we had people coming to the hospitality desk for information most of the day.
The clean up was less well attended, but those that were part of it did a great job. Thanks to everyone.

Jim Henry passed on more bad news last Thursday. He found out that not only was Rob's left leg blood clot not showing much improvement, but his right leg had begun to develop a clot as well. This was devastating because it meant that the Lovenox (a blood thinner) that he was on wasn’t working. The doctors have put him back on Heparin, but have also prepared us for the possibility of a pulmonary embolism if that doesn’t work. The drawback of Heparin is that he can’t self-administer it. So as long as he is on Heparin he’ll have to stay in the hospital.

Murray P's Phearless Prognostications
In the last issue, I fearlessly ventured into some predictions for the International Contests. I was semi-accurate. Here are the predictions, and the actuals.
Chorus contest:
Quartet Contest:
I had four of the five choruses in order and five of five quartets, but the order was totally different.
This was a totally unusual set of contests in that I agreed with the judges' decisions right down the line.
Plattsburgh Picnic - July 27, 2003
The officers and members of the Cumberland Bay Chorus extend an invitation to join them at their Annual Chapter Picnic.
Their chapter will furnish hotdogs and hamburgers, buns (they’ll have a special Michigan sauce) and soda. (If you prefer other beverages feel free to bring them. You are responsible for appropriate sharing.) New York State law prohibits the chapter from offering alcoholic beverages. The chapter will also furnish condiments, plastic tableware, cups plates and napkins. Everyone attending is asked to bring a dish or desert to share, and an ice chest and ice for food storage. For planning purposes they need to know, by Friday July 18, how many will be attending.
Planned activities will include a great picnic with an opportunity to taste some delicious favourite recipes; games for fun. Following the serving of watermelon there will be a watermelon seed hurling (?) contest. The various games will have children, women’s and men’s divisions. There will be prizes.
There will be a lot of singing to include a "Make-up Your Own Quartet" contest.
They look forward to hearing quartets and choruses from the different chapters and a huge combined chorus. They will let you know the songs to be sung as a combined chorus.
