Quartetting at 7:00PM, tonight!

There is no time like the present to try your hand at singing with three other guys in a quartet. We are going to start the Barber Pole Cat program again, and all members who are interested in learning, or helping to teach are welcome.

We are starting Monday, February 28 at 7:00 PM.

Show time in 13 weeks!

Our Show Chairman extraordinaire, Bert Brossoit has has started taking advance orders for show tickets

Bert provided a questionnaire to permit us to order tickets for the great show we will be having on Saturday, May 28, 2005. When the tickets are made available, let's get out there and sell them. It seems like we have lots of time, but it will fly by before we know it.

This will be a joint show, with the West Island Sweet Adeline Chorus and will feature Commonly Unique and our 2004 International Quartet Champions, Gotcha!.

Beautiful Dreamer comes alive?

We spent about 35 or 40 minutes analysing Beautiful Dreamer last Monday evening, and it was time well spent. We developed a plan that explains where we are, what we are seeing and what we are feeling. It was a collaborative effort, and we should be able to use the pan to get "in the mood" to sing this great song.

Lyrics

  • Beautiful dreamer wake unto me

  • Starlight and dew drops are waiting for thee.
  •

  • Sounds of the rude world heard in the day. Lulled by the moonlight have all passed away.
  •

  • Oh beautiful dreamer, queen of my song.
  •

  • Beautiful dreamer awake unto me

Analysis

  • Rural Southern Mansion
  • Before dawn
  • Bedroom
  • Asleep in bed, along side our lover
  • "Become aware of me."
  • Gentle and soft
  • Soft light

  • She's beginning to stir
  • "Intense to soft"
  • Enraptured by her
  • Assurance
  •

  • Semi-conscious
  • Passion Intensifies
  •

  • Come together
  • Closeness

We like to sing 'em in Bb

The Harmonet provides lots of disagreements, but it also provides the occasional useful gem.

Bill Biffle, arranger, and formerly a Singing Judge was responding to a question about the range of the melody line of a song, and made this interesting contribution. I have edited his email, and added some additional information.

The whole issue of where the melody lies also brings up the "do to do" or "so to so" song thing. Most easily harmonisable songs are of the "so to so" ilk. That is, the melody's lowest and highest notes are - basically - the 5th of the tonic chord. Put another way, the keynote lies about in the middle of the melody's range. Our songs that are in Bb fit this mould and the voicings that this kind of melody suggests ring the most, too. Think "My Wild Irish Rose" and "Down Our Way".

Songs that have the lowest and highest melody notes on or about the root of the key chord ("do to do songs") are not as easy to harmonise to or to make ring. (Songs in male voicings that are in F or G are "do to do" songs.)

We sing better and like it best in Bb. Eb rings, of course, but it's not as warm and satisfying a key as our old favourite Bb is. The Barber Pole Cat Program has seven Bb songs.
