    NEDCDA Seminars

The Northeastern District Chorus Directors Association (NEDCDA) was founded in 1991. It's purposes are to support the training of existing, new, and potential directors, to encourage the exchange of information and ideas, and to advise the District Convention Team on the selection of contest sites with regard to performance conditions and logistics. The CDA is self governing and financialy self-sustaining, receiving no monetary assistance from the NED. The CDA provides guidance and assistance to the NED VP-CDD in the planning of Chorus Director classes at NED schools. In addition, the CDA operates an annual weekend seminar for all NED directors and assistants, often inviting neighboring district directors.

NEDCDA Officers Elected for 2002

The annual meeting of the NEDCDA was held at the conclusion of NED COTS on Sunday, January 13, 2002 in Falmouth. The highlight of the meeting was the annual election of officers. Chuck Eaker, director of Schenectady's Electric City Chorus was re-elected President. Renee Silverstein, director of Poughkeepsie's Newyorkers Chorus was re-elected Vice-President. Stephen Anderson, director of New London's Sea Notes Chorus was elected Secretary/Treasurer. Stephen replaces Ernie Johansen who has retired from the NEDCDA board to spend more time sunning in Florida.

2002 Membership Dues are Due

It is time for all NED chorus directors and assistant directors to renew their memberships. Send a check for $15 (per membership) payable to "NEDCDA" to:
      Stephen Anderson
      37 Dimmock Rd.
      Waterford, CT 06385
to cover your 2002 NEDCDA dues. Your dues are a legitimate expense of your chapter and support the work being done by the NEDCDA which is entirely supported by its dues. Even though we are an official affiliate of the NED, we are completely self-supporting. Please join us.

If you are a new director or assistant director of a chorus in the NED, send contact information to one of the NEDCDA officers so we can make sure you keep informed of activities and opportunities. While you're at it, include a $15 check for your 2002 dues.

Directors College Scholarships Announced

This year there will be 50! scholarships to Directors College for front-line chorus directors attending Directors College for the first time. Each district is guaranteed to have two of its directors selected. The scholarship will cover tuition to the school. You will have to get yourself to the school, but your chapter should be more than willing to cover that cost. Don't hesitate to apply for a scholarship. Half of the scholarships are being sponsored by Harmony Foundation.

There are two eligibility requirements.
         1. You must be a front-line director of an SPEBSQSA chorus.
         2. You are a first-time attendee to Directors College.  (i.e.:  you've never been before.)
For the 2001 process, the drawing of the winners was completely random, without regard for district boundaries. This year, the selection process will again be random, but there will be two separate and distinct drawings with two chances for everyone to win.  The first drawing will award a scholarship to two different directors from each district's pool of applicants.  All of the remaining names from each district drawing will then be put in a bucket and the final 18 scholarships will then be drawn. (If any district has but one applicant, that district's second scholarship will be surrendered and added to the second drawing.)

There is no form to fill out, no paperwork to return, no need to submit a resume, and no need to gather letters of reference. Simply send your name and address to Jerry Knickerbocker. You may send your name and address by surface mail to him at
    Jerry Knickerbocker

or send your name and address to him by e-mail at jerrykn@csonline.net.

The Directors College is held in conjunction with Harmony College and lasts an entire week. This year it will be held from July 28 to August 4, 2002 in St. Joseph's Missouri. If you have any doubts about going, don't. The school has gotten better and better over the years, and now offers training that is very sophisticated. For complete information including a catalog and schedule, visit the Harmony College/Directors College web page.

Applications must be received by May 25, 2002.

Ernie Johansen Retires from NEDCDA Board

Much discussion at the NEDCDA annual meeting in January centered on how to fill the enormous void left by Ernie Johansen's retiring from the board. Ernie has been the Secretary/Treasurer of the NEDCDA since the organization was founded (by Ernie, actually) in 1992, and he is the main reason for its continued success in its mission to both identify and grow chorus directors in the NED. The NED and the NEDCDA are deeply indebted to Ernie for his tireless efforts supporting those of us who direct choruses in the district. Thanks, Ernie, and enjoy the sunshine.

Left with a huge pair of shoes to fill, the current board plans to replace Ernie with at least three people. First, they will propose that the Secretary/Treasurer office be split into two offices: Secretary and Treasurer. Second, they will appoint yet another person, a Dean of the Seminar, to take on the gigantic task of putting together the annual seminar. Suggestions and offers of help are always welcome. Contact any of the officers.
