The Northeastern District Chorus Directors Association (NEDCDA) was founded in 1991. It's purposes are to support the training of existing, new, and potential directors, to encourage the exchange of information and ideas, and to advise the District Convention Team on the selection of contest sites with regard to performance conditions and logistics. The CDA is self governing and financialy self-sustaining, receiving no monetary assistance from the NED. The CDA provides guidance and assistance to the NED VP-CDD in the planning of Chorus Director classes at NED schools. In addition, the CDA operates an annual weekend seminar for all NED directors and assistants, often inviting neighboring district directors. |
Fall, 2002December 6-8, 2002 Directors Seminar PostponedThe NEDCDA was recently informed that the site we contracted with for the 2002 Directors Seminar is no longer operating. After unsuccessfully scrambling to find an alternative site for the same date, it was finally decided to postpone the 9th annual seminar until sometime in 2003. Sadly, this news reached us after the article announcing the seminar was published in the Fall, 2002 issue of the Nor'easter. Happily, the scheduled faculty, Steve Jamison, Karen Rourke, and Steve Tramack, are all hoping the new date will be one when they are available. Fall Taping of Directors in JeopardyErnie Johansen has informed the NEDCDA that he will not be able to tape directors from behind the chorus at the Fall chorus contest in Lake Placid. We're hoping to obtain some of Ernie's fantastic equipment that makes this possible. We will need some volunteers to be backstage to operate the video equipment. If you know of someone who is willing to help us with this, please contact Chuck Eaker. Two NED Directors Win Directors College Scholarships
There were an unprecedented 50 scholarships
available this year to Directors College for front-line directors who have
never had the opportunity to go before. Twenty-five of the scholarships came
from the Society Chorus Director Development Committee (SCDDC).
The other 25 were provided by Harmony Foundation. This is just another example of how your generosity to Harmony
Foundation is making the world a better place for the four-part close harmony
we all love. For more information about Harmony Foundation, visit its web site
at http://www.harmonyfoundation.org.
The drawing of scholarship winners was held May
25th, and two NED directors emerged as winners. They are Michael Martin,
director of the Portland, ME Downeasters, and Paul Creaser, director of
the Halifax, NS Atlantic Swells Chorus.
Congratulations to Michael and Paul. Your choruses
are very fortunate.
Here is the original list of winners. Notice that Jay Wiley is listed as one of the NED's winners, but due to a conflict Jay was unable to accept the scholarship. Another name was drawn from the remaining NED applicants, and Paul Creaser came up the winner.

SCDDC Directors College Scholarship WINNERS
An Interesting Web SiteHere is the URL for a fascinating web site: http://www.ncvs.org. There is an"Information for Singers" page at: http://www.ncvs.org/singers which has a link to a set of articles by Ingo Titze originally published in "The Journal of Singing". They are short and provocative. Look at the third one in the list: "Choir Warm-ups: How Effective are They?" at: http://www.ncvs.org/singers/choir_wa.pdf (it's a PDF file so you need to have Adobe Acrobat installed). Perhaps we need to change what we encourage in our choruses especially if we are moving toward asking our singers to take more responsibility for their contribution to the chorus. Can you imagine warming up the way an orchestra or sports team does? |
